GE: An Optical Disk To Store 100 DVD’s

General Electric has announced the development of a standard-sized disc that can store up to 500 gigabytes (GB) of data (Blu-ray stores up to 50 gigabytes). The disc uses holographic storage technology to record data in layers , and looks to be the next advancement in low-cost data storage.

Note: The holographic storage division was originally part of GE’s plastics division, before it was sold to SABIC (Saudi Basic Industries Corp) for $11.6 billion in 2007.

White House: Dr Ahmed Zewail Becomes An Obama Advisor

We’d like to express our congratulations to Dr Ahmed Zewail, who was recently named in Barrack Obama’s President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST). Dr Zewail is a highly-respected professor of Chemistry and Physics, he  won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1999 for his work on molecular transformations, and is currently the director of the Physical Biology Center at Caltech (California Institute of Technology). Amongst other members are Eric Schmidt (CEO of Google), Craig Mundle (CSO of Microsoft) and David Shaw (Chief Scientist of Shaw Research).

Voxpilot: All-In-One Communications Solution

Voxpilot (a provider of enterprise level voice and video communication systems ), has partnered with Saudi based Technology Bridge (who import foreign technology solutions and act as dealers within the region) to supply their new Unified Communications Solution (UCS) platform. The solution is the first all-in-one product to be handled in the region (it will have sms, fax, click-to-call, video-conferencing and speech-based-self-service).

Twitter: Attracting The Best Of Google

Twitter has (so far) attracted two Google top-level employees to join their team. Douglas Bowman (who was Google’s design lead) is now creative director at Twitter. The second and latest convertor is Dustin Diaz, a Gmail engineer who recently resigned to join the Twitter development team (he also posted an announcement on Twitter).
