
Meraki is a San Francisco based award-winning provider of Wi-Fi networking solutions (they’re backed by Sequoia Capita, who have been involved with Apple, Google, Oracle and YouTube). The term meraki means doing something with with soul, creativity, and love. Their latest technology is Meraki Solar, a wireless system that is completely energy independent by operating on it’s own solar-charged battery. The company has been involved with several projects to offer free Wi-Fi, and their “Free The Net” movement aims to make San Francisco a completely free wireless city.

Compass is a Chinese managed project of fifteen satellites that create an independent global satellite navigation system. Similar to the GPS, there will be two levels to this system: Open and Restricted (which will be controlled by the military). This leaves the nation with priority and control over higher frequency ranges, which gives faster data transfer rates. The second of the fifteen was recently successfully launched, and authorities hope to have the system running by 2015.

Long Term Evolution (LTE) is the next major step in mobile radio communications. Several major telecom companies have already decided to adopt this standard (Verizon, Vodafone, Tele2 AB), hoping to have the networks deployed by 2011.
Note:
The current fastest standard used is 3G, which has downlink rates of up to 14.4 Mbits per second. LTE will deliver at least 100 Mbits per second. Do we need that much data? Comment & Discuss.

Their latest product is a 180° digital window camera which uses an ethernet connection and is as big as a light switch.
