DARPA: National Cyber Range

DARPA (Defence Advanced Research Project Agency), the research and development arm of the United States Department of Defence, has announced the launch of a new project known as the National Cyber Range. The initiative aims to create a private virtual world which will be used as a test site where advanced researchers (hackers) can test cyber warfare, as well as cyber defence. This is important because the United States Government receives roughly 80,000 cyber attacks a year. Keep in mind DARPA is the agency that created the internet back in the 1960′s.

Wolfram Alpha: Knowledge Search Engine

Wolfram Alpha, part of Wolfram Research (a leader in computational science), is a project that aims to make all systematic knowledge (anything that can be modeled) accessible to the mass in a matter of seconds. This comes from a new generation of search engines, with the goal to build a provider of factual knowledge. Users can either enter keywords or questions. We tested the system out, and it really is a breakthrough in the computer sciences field. Here’s what we entered, click on each search to see the results: Dubai , Glass Of Orange Juice , Food Production Saudi Arabia Vs Iran , 3rd Largest Country In Asia , MSFT Vs Apple  , Price Of Oil May 14 1981 .

General Electric has announced the development of a standard-sized disc that can store up to 500 gigabytes (GB) of data (Blu-ray stores up to 50 gigabytes). The disc uses holographic storage technology to record data in layers , and looks to be the next advancement in low-cost data storage.

Note: The holographic storage division was originally part of GE’s plastics division, before it was sold to SABIC (Saudi Basic Industries Corp) for $11.6 billion in 2007.
