General Electric has announced the development of a standard-sized disc that can store up to 500 gigabytes (GB) of data (Blu-ray stores up to 50 gigabytes). The disc uses holographic storage technology to record data in layers , and looks to be the next advancement in low-cost data storage.
Note: The holographic storage division was originally part of GE’s plastics division, before it was sold to SABIC (Saudi Basic Industries Corp) for $11.6 billion in 2007.
