A group of students at Harvard Business School have conducted research testing Twitter‘s purpose, and information on it’s user activity. Some key findings: Men have 15% more followers than women , A man is twice as likely to follow another man than a woman , Most activity on a social network (posted on Twitter) is focused around women , The average number of lifetime tweets per user is one , 10% of Twitter users account for 90% of tweets. Twitter has (so far) attracted two Google top-level employees to join their team. Douglas Bowman (who was Google’s design lead) is now creative director at Twitter. The second and latest convertor is Dustin Diaz, a Gmail engineer who recently resigned to join the Twitter development team (he also posted an announcement on Twitter).

StockTwits uses Twitter to provide an investment idea and information service. Users can create their own portfolio and track specific stocks, allowing them to read all updates (through Twitter) relating to their stocks. The founders aim to make this a community-powered information exchange, essentially turning it into the first social micro-blogging investment community.

An update for those interested in the Google-Twitter story. Twitter‘s co-founder Biz Stone has responded with an announcement titled Sometimes We Talk. He noted they were hiring, and a position of Director Of Strategic Partnerships may hint a partnership with Google. At this point, nothing directly from Twitter suggesting a takeover.
